The position will be based in Rockville, Maryland. We are looking for a skilled and motivated researcher/developer with expertise in image processing, algorithm development, and deep learning. The successful applicant will be involved with developing computational analysis of images and other data acquired in collaboration with scientists, biologists, and/or clinicians across the NIH.     Computational analyses will involve combinatorial assessment of disparate data types (i.e. patient demographics, risk factors, genetic information, 2D and 3D imaging modalities, etc.) into comprehensive classification and regression models.  It is desired that the scientist will construct models using a variety of approaches including traditional machine learning (i.e. logistic regression, ridge/lasso regression, random forests, support vector machines, etc.), graph analytics, and deep learning. The scientist should also be familiar with development and optimization for CUDA and/or OpenCL and able to utilize packages and libraries that call these accelerators.    The scientist will participate in experimental design, data collection, data analysis and manuscript preparation; assist intramural staff, including students and postdoctoral fellows; stay current with scientific literature; stay informed about new approaches and technologies, including participation in conferences, workshops, and/or formal classroom instruction; independently locate and utilize scientific resources; and co-author peer reviewed publications.

Job Description We are looking for a Senior HPC Software Engineer to support projects at the NIH. The position will be based in Rockville, Maryland. We are looking for a skilled and motivated researcher/developer with expertise in image processing, algorithm development, and software design. The successful applicant will be involved with developing computational infrastructure for the analysis of imaging, proteomic, molecular, metabolomic,  and/or clinical data in collaboration with scientists, biologists, and/or clinicians across the NIH.     Computational infrastructure will involve development and optimization of data utilities used or developed by our Data Science Team. A relatively low-level understanding of file systems, file/disk IO, and memory management will be required. Projects include optimization and parallelization of reading/writing gigabyte and terabyte N-dimensional arrays from disk, abstraction of array data for efficient parsing and translation of a variety of file formats, wrappers of low level code for use in Python (PyBind11/Cython), Julia, and NodeJS, and an expansion of a high performance feature store for our AI/ML team. The ideal candidate should be a seasoned modern C++ developer with significant experience using parallel programming technologies. These include CUDA, Vulkan, and/or OpenCL in addition to OpenMP and MPI. There is an emphasis on developing algorithms that are optimized for hyperthreading and GPUs.   The engineer will participate in program architecture, algorithmic design, implementation, and testing their work at scale (TB scale datasets ingested frequently). They should be familiar with modern software design patterns and efficient and safe memory management. Their work will be part of an open source project, and thus, their work will be available to the community on GitHub and if the engineer desires  can be part of journal articles or white papers. The engineer will also have the ability to mentor junior members of the team and if desired the position has the potential to lead to leadership roles. The applicant will be expected to stay current with the constantly evolving technology landscape; stay informed about new approaches and technologies, including participation in conferences, workshops, and/or formal classroom instruction; independently locate and utilize scientific resources; and co-author peer reviewed publications.

Responsibilities: - Work with the Translational informatics Director to implement a clear, transparent process to manage, track progress, and prioritize efforts. This includes communicating technical and scientific aspects of translational research projects and software/resources, and providing efficient updates on progress to the Translational informatics Director - Research and summarize background materials related to DPI Informatics projects; locate scientific or other policy related information on the internet and other means. - Ensure effective project plans are in place and operational. Responsibilities - Develop analytical protein purification methods for antigens under consideration as vaccine candidates. Purification methods include affinity chromatography, IEC, and SEC using an AKTA FPLC system. - Perform a variety of recombinant protein analytical techniques including SDS-PAGE, western blotting, ELISA, thermal shift assays, SEC/LSFPLC and BLI. - Perform all steps required for recombinant protein expression, such as high-throughput expression of proteins in mammalian cell culture, yeast, baculovirus and bacterial cells; expression plasmid cloning and preparation. - Perform immunoassays and flow cytometry experiments on animal and human samples. - Maintain accurate daily records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks, making minor modifications or adaptions to established methods, procedures and/or techniques to solve problems in the work. - Calibrate and operate a variety of laboratory instruments used to perform tests and analyses. - Interpret, evaluate and discuss the result of each experiment as part of the planning process. - Prepare various media, stock supplies and other reagents for use in the laboratory. - Responsible for quality control of the laboratory including upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment. - Order and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, liquid nitrogen; handle biological materials, infectious agents, biological wastes, etc. - Follow existing SOPs lab protocols and assist in implementation of new procedures. - Maintain laboratory equipment, maintain lab antigen inventory, and order lab supplies as needed. - Perform computer analysis of data and use computer and computer software to prepare data for publication. - Maintain crystallography plate supplies using automated liquid handling robots, perform automated crystallization screening, analyze crystal screens to identify growth conditions, reporting results and data storage. Experience Required / Requirements - PhD degree in a science related field. Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Master’s degree is equivalent to a PhD. Five (5) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelor’s degree is equivalent to a PhD. - Minimum of one (1) year of related experience. - Background in biology, chemistry, and/or biophysics. - Relevant laboratory experience in automation and instrumentation. - Good documentation and communication skills. - Basic computer skills including experience with Microsoft Word and Excel. More advanced experience e.g., familiarity with PowerPoint and other graphics programs. This includes evaluating the hypothesis, objectives, study design, feasibility, and regulatory requirements, as well as identifying medical and logistical problems that may impede a study. - Advise program management of merits and deficiencies in proposed clinical studies. - Provide subject matter expertise during protocol development leading to review at the Division level and ensure that the concerns raised during the review are addressed by the Protocol Development Team in a timely manner. - Provide clinical expertise to assist in developing Investigational New Drug (IND) applications. Individuals providing this expertise will be named as reviewer of information relevant to the safety of the drug in question, on line 15 and 16 of the IND application (FDA Form 1571). - Evaluate annual IND annual reports for medical safety and report findings to RAB. - Provide medical expertise in protocol follow-up stages for subject safety and protection, reliability of study endpoint data and make appropriate recommendations to DAIDS’ leadership to ensure trials are conducted according to protocol. - Provide clinical and scientific information for preparing NIAID communications to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), other government and nongovernmental agencies, pharmaceutical companies and Data Safety Monitoring Boards. - Conduct site visits, when necessary, to obtain additional data and information for use by federal staff in the consideration and evaluation of ongoing and future programs. - Preview serious adverse event (SAE) reports providing expert medical advice for potential impact of SAEs in ongoing research and participate in the preparation of reports submitted to the FDA. - Attend and participate in national/international scientific meetings/conferences in order to stay abreast of current research findings and to interact with other investigators to promote collaborations. Experience Required / Requirements - MD or equivalent degree; active Medical license preferred. - Completed training in Internal Medicine or Pediatrics. - Training in Infectious Diseases or Pulmonary Medicine preferred. - Board Certification in Internal Medicine or Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases, or Pulmonary Medicine preferred. - Experience in in clinical trials, especially TB or other infectious diseases preferred. - Experience in TB clinical care or studies preferred.
