Overview

Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Laboratory of Viral Diseases (LVD), DNA tumor Virus Section, Bethesda, MD.

Note: Part-time position for a total of 60 hours.

Responsibilities

  • Search online sequence databases and publications for sequences of novel papillomavirus complete genomes that have been deposited since last PaVE update.
  • Compare L1 nucleotide sequence of novel PV genomes to determine (using ICTV rules) whether they are novel viral types and to assign Genus and Species.
  • Download the existing PV genomes from the PaVE website and combine with the new genomes.
  • Annotate the combined novel and existing genomes using the PuMA- papillomavirus genome annotation tool located at https://github.com/KVD-lab/puma. Generate output of annotated genome, protein and region sequences for uploading into PaVE.
  • Prepare tables of final Human and Animal PV genomes.
  • Run a phylogenetic analysis to generate a Newick phylogenetic tree for upload to the PaVE website.
  • During the update process, consult with members of NIAID Bioinformatics Computational Biosciences Branch (BCBB) team to troubleshoot any issues that arise.

Experience Required / Requirements

  • PhD in a related field is required.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Papillomavirus genome taxonomy, phylogeny and annotation is required.
