Axle Informatics is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Scientific Project Manager to coordinate the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Frederick National Laboratory serological science program for SARS-CoV-2. NCI has been charged to develop, validate, implement, and improve serological testing and the associated technologies. A rapid response project has been initiated to provide coordinated research efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and provide advanced research solutions. The project consortium consists of a Serological Sciences Network with capacity building centers and serological centers of excellence to conduct SARS-CoV-2 specific serological projects. The Scientific Project Manager will be the liaison across consortium activities to assure communication and timely outcomes. The position is located at the Frederick National Laboratory at Fort Detrick, Maryland.


  • Provide professional project management, logistics coordination, and communication support across the Serological Sciences Network for SARS-CoV-2.
  • Coordinate with consortium scientists to establish project plans and status reporting. 
  • Manage external stakeholders and communication efforts to ensure project success.  
  • Coordinate sharing of data, reagents, samples, and biological assays.
  • Coordinate comparison of results among different centers and assays through inter-Center collaborative activities, leading to international serology standardization.
  • Coordinate partnerships with national and international organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC), and others.
  • Work in close collaboration with NCI leadership and program staff.
  • Coordinate event logistics for meetings, seminars, and briefings. Facilitate meetings as required.
  • Develop, manage, and track relevant performance measures. Advise on resources and process improvements to achieve targets and program goals. Keep leadership informed of major changes or problems in the program through briefings, meetings, and reports. 
  • Provide ongoing task management, including coordination of deliverables and monitoring resource allocation and use. Coordinate across the organization and communicate with leadership on risk and resolution plans.


  • Ph.D. in Life Sciences such as biology, molecular biology, virology, immunology, or another similar programmatic discipline, or a Master of Science degree with 4 years of comparable experience.
  • Experience with Informatics and Data curation.
  • Technical experience in assay development, next generation sequencing, or viral infections is preferred.
  • Minimum of four years of experience as a project manager. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to track multiple projects concurrently, identify risks, and propose solutions is required.
  • Ability to research information independently and work collaboratively in a team is required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, customer service, oral and written communication skills including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from collaborators and leadership is required. 
  • Ability to write clear, coherent reports in simple language with attention to detail. 
  • Demonstrated ability to provide sound judgment and a positive, self-motivated attitude.
